Leading the Atlantic Diving Team is Olympic Coach Osvaldo “Pito” Alberty, whose passion, knowledge, and experience continue to inspire young athletes both in and out of the pool. Today, Coach Pito dedicates himself to introducing children to the sport of diving, helping them develop their skills, build confidence, and pursue their dreams of becoming the next generation of divers and champions.
But there was a time not long ago when Coach Pito himself was a magician in midair.
He could launch from the one-meter and three-meter springboards and the 10-meter platform, performing flips, somersaults, and twists before making a graceful entry into the water—legs straight, toes pointed, and every movement executed with precision. He was one of the top divers in his native Puerto Rico and earned the honor of qualifying for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
Unfortunately, just one year before the Olympics, Coach Pito’s life changed dramatically. In 1995, he began experiencing flu-like symptoms, a high fever, and severe muscle weakness. Within a week, he became paralyzed from the neck down after being diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS).
For many people, such a devastating setback might have marked the end of their athletic journey. For Coach Pito, it became the beginning of a different kind of journey.
Through tremendous determination, hard work, and an unwavering love for diving, Coach Pito rebuilt his life and found a new purpose in the sport that had given him so much. Since his battle with GBS in 1995, he has dedicated himself to sharing the knowledge, techniques, and lessons he learned from his own coaches and from his experiences around the world.
In 1999, Coach Pito became the Director and Head Coach of the Atlantic Diving Team, where he continues to pass that knowledge on to young divers. His goal is not only to teach athletes how to dive, but also to teach them the values of discipline, perseverance, commitment, and believing in themselves.
Coach Pito’s story is a powerful reminder that sometimes the greatest champions are not defined by the medals they win, but by the obstacles they overcome and the lives they inspire.
Today, every time a young diver steps onto the board at Atlantic Diving Team, Coach Pito has an opportunity to share a little of the knowledge, passion, and determination that carried him through his own remarkable journey from Olympic hopeful to coach, mentor, and inspiration to the next generation
